January is often a time to tighten your belt and put in place a saving plan for the year ahead.
As more of us spend time in our homes energy bills could be higher than usual, while the cost of TV and streaming services and other utilities can put a strain on households in the early months of the year.
There are a number of ways to cut your bills in January and most of them take just a couple of minutes. In some cases, you can actually earn money in the form of bonuses or incentives.
Here are four ways to save or earn money quickly in January 2021.
Cut your energy bills in a few minutes
The saving here varies depending on what energy tariff you are on.
If you are on a standard energy tariff prices are set to rise for half a million people at the end of January and unless people switch, they could be out of pocket by £171 across the year.
There are a number of free switching services that offer to automatically switch you to the lowest available tariff. Look After My Bills is one such service and promises to save people hundreds on their energy bills.
It says: “The most we have saved someone is a whopping £2,023, but normally we save people on average £253..”
Other services such as MoneySupermarket can also be used to switch your bills and save money on your annual bills.
Switch your TV deal
If you are coming to the end of your TV contract now is a good time to haggle for a lower price, especially if you are also paying for Netflix.
Sky is selling a package that gives you access to Netflix and Sky’s standard channels for just £25. You can get that deal in the January sales here.
Alternatively you can take advantage of a number of free trials and offers to get access to streaming services. Amazon Prime has thousands of original series, sport documentaries and films. You can get a month free here.
Disney+ is here in the UK and you can get a free seven-day trial here. A subscription costs around £60 a year and gives you access to Disney and Pixar films, and series such as The Mandalorian.
Netflix recently revived its free trial, just sign up as usual choosing from the basic, standard or premium package. You’ll need to enter your card details but it won’t be charged until the free trial is finished.
Bank are usually keen to tempt you from your current bank and they often offer rewards for those who do. Some of these do come with catches but it can be a quick way to earn some money.
In January banks will often offer incentives ranging from freebies to cash in your account. Switching takes about ten minutes via a switching service and all of your payments and direct debits should move over automatically.
You can check the latest switching offers here on MoneySupermarket.
